The Impact of Camp Kyusa 2025

From January 9th to 12th, a transformative camp took place at the Discovery Centre in Wairaka – Camp Kyusa. This four-day camp brought together learners from various backgrounds to explore and engage in open, thoughtful discussions on critical topics that are often considered taboo or underexplored in mainstream education. The camp provided a safe, supportive environment where participants could learn, share, and grow as individuals and as a collective.

A Space for Learning and Empowerment

Camp Kyusa was not just a typical camping experience; it was a vibrant space where participants explored a range of subjects that are integral to understanding oneself and navigating the world around them. Central to the camp's programming was the focus on menstruation, sex and pleasure, STDs and family planning , leadership, gender roles, and gender-based violence.

Menstruation Awareness: One of the key sessions centered on menstruation. Participants learned about the biology of menstruation, menstrual hygiene, and the cultural significance surrounding periods. Breaking down stigmas, especially for young women and girls, was a central objective. By discussing menstruation openly, learners gained a deeper understanding of their own bodies and how to care for themselves during their cycles. This session helped normalize conversations about periods and equipped participants with the knowledge to care for their physical and emotional well-being.

Sex, Pleasure, and Consent: Sexuality education is essential for young people, yet it’s often met with discomfort or avoided entirely. At Camp Kyusa, facilitators offered a candid and respectful discussion on topics related to sex, pleasure, and consent. Learners were empowered with the tools to understand healthy sexual relationships, the importance of mutual respect, and how to navigate their bodies and desires in a safe, consensual manner. By creating a space to talk openly, Camp Kyusa helped demystify these topics, which are crucial for building respectful and informed relationships.

Leadership and Gender Roles: Leadership training was another highlight of the camp, with participants learning valuable skills that they could apply in their communities and beyond. The camp emphasized the importance of gender equality in leadership roles, breaking down the barriers that often prevent women and girls from stepping into positions of power. Attendees were encouraged to challenge traditional gender roles, develop confidence, and recognize their own leadership potential.

Tackling Gender-Based Violence: A major theme of the camp was addressing gender-based violence (GBV), which continues to affect many individuals globally. Through interactive discussions and workshops, the learners were taught to recognize the signs of GBV, understand its impacts, and explore ways to create safer environments. These conversations were designed to equip the young participants with the tools to challenge harmful behaviors in their communities and stand up for the rights of those affected by violence.

Creative Writing for Expression and Reflection

Creativity was another key component of Camp Kyusa, with creative writing sessions allowing participants to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Writing became a powerful tool for reflection and self-expression, helping the learners process the information they were absorbing and share their own unique perspectives. This outlet allowed the campers to explore their inner worlds and articulate their ideas in creative and thoughtful ways.

Building a Stronger Community

Beyond the sessions and workshops, the camp was an opportunity for learners to build lasting connections. Camp Kyusa fostered a sense of community and solidarity among the participants, many of whom forged friendships that will last well beyond the camp itself. By coming together to share stories, challenges, and triumphs, the learners created a network of support and understanding.

The Impact of Camp Kyusa

The success of Camp Kyusa lies in its ability to address important and often difficult topics in a way that is accessible, respectful, and empowering. By focusing on education, personal growth, and leadership, the camp equipped participants with valuable knowledge and skills that will serve them well in their personal and professional lives. As these young people return to their communities, they carry with them a deeper understanding of themselves, each other, and the world around them.

The future of gender equality, leadership, and healthy relationships depends on the education and empowerment of young people, and Camp Kyusa is a shining example of how such initiatives can make a meaningful impact.

Conclusion

Camp Kyusa was more than just a camp; it was an experience that inspired change, fostered growth, and created an environment where young minds could engage with essential issues in a safe and supportive setting. By addressing important topics like menstruation, sex, pleasure, leadership, and gender-based violence, the camp helped participants build the confidence and knowledge to be leaders in their own right and advocates for positive change in their communities. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of these empowered learners in the future.
